MALIBU, Calif. — Pepperdine's duos of Emma Eden and McKenna Thomas as well as Kate Clermont and Madison Oriskovich are set to compete at the AVCA Fall Pairs Championship this weekend in Huntsville, Ala.
Â
This is the first time in the championship's three years of existence that the Waves have sent two pairs to the tournament. Pepperdine earned its first bid by coming in second in the West Coast Conference tournament last season. The Waves earned their second bid after Emma Eden and McKenna Thomas won their bracket at the SoCal Fall Challenge in Manhattan Beach, Calif. on October 18-20.Â
Â
The championship consists of 64 pairs and 16 pools of four teams. There will be modified pool play on Friday, November 15 where teams within each pool will compete in a mini bracketed tournament. The winners of the initial rounds will play each other in the 'first place game' of pool play, while the losers of the first round will compete against each other in the 'third place game' of pool play.
Â
Following pool play on Friday, each pool will have a first, second, third and fourth place team. First, second and third place will move on to the official championship bracket where the 2 and 3 seeds coming out of each pool will play their first round of bracket play on Friday evening. The winners of each pool will move directly on to Saturday and receive a bye. The fourth place in each pool will head to the consolation bracket.
Â
Senior Kate Clermont (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) and senior Madison Oriskovich (Santa Barbara, Calif.) are in pool two and are the 34th overall seed. They will take on the No. 31 seeded duo of Skylar Martin and Aubrey O'Gorman from LSU at 10 a.m. on Friday. Other schools in pool two include Florida Atlantic and Colorado Mesa.
Â
Freshman Emma Eden (Albuquerque, N.M.) and senior McKenna Thomas (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) are in pool three and are the No. 35 overall seed. They are set to face off against the 30th seeded pair of Madison Morrow and Tess Spaansen from TAMU-CC. Other schools in pool three include Long Beach State and UT Martin.
Â
The AVCA Fall Pairs Championship will conclude the Pepperdine beach volleyball team's fall schedule.
