MALIBU, Calif. — Kicking off the Pepperdine track team's 14-meet schedule, the Waves will head to the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open, hosted by the University of Idaho this Friday and Saturday.
This weekend's meet will not have a team score. Links to the live results can be found on the Pepperdine track team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
A total of 21 runners on the women's indoor track team will head to Moscow, Idaho for the indoor season opener. Of that group, nine will be making their indoor debuts in the Kibbie Dome's flat, 300-meter surface that is prone to fast times.Â
The sprints will be highlighted by Kaley Peterson, who is scheduled to compete in the 60- and 200-meter dashes. Peterson is the current school record holder in the 200 meters with her time of 25.11 from last year, yet this will be her debut race in the 60-meters.
Four middle-distance runners will toe the line for the seldom-run 600-meter dash, while sophomore Ashley Egan is the Waves' lone representative in the 800 meters. On the distance side, the 3,000-meter run is the event of choice, as junior Eden Mittlesdorf will lead six Waves in the longest distance event of the day.
From here, the Waves will compete at the New Mexico Collegiate Open on Feb. 2-3 before competing in the final regular-season indoor meet: The MPSF Indoor Championships, held at The Podium in Spokane, Wash. on Feb. 25-26. Despite losing BYU to the Big 12 this year, the MPSF features several West Coast Conference schools. Saint Mary's will make its MPSF debut this season, joining San Francisco, Portland and Pepperdine as the WCC member institutions in the MPSF Conference.
Before the indoor regular-season finale, outdoor season begins for some of the team at Westmont's Sunshine Open on Feb. 10. After indoor season ends, the rest of the team will head outdoors for the Beach Opener, held at Long Beach State on March 2. A stint at the Occidental Distance Carnival the following Friday, March 9 will be the last meet until a two-week break in mid-March.
The Waves return for a pair of meets at UCLA: The Bob Larsen Distance Carnival (3/22) and the Rajer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational (3/23). Two Northern California meets — the Mike Fanelli Track Classic and the Stanford Invitational — will follow for the Waves on March 29-30 before the team heads south for the Triton Invitational on April 6.
Competition ramps up for Pepperdine as the Waves will toe the line at the Bryan Clay Invitational — one of the biggest collegiate track and field meets — from April 11-13. From there, they will compete at the Battle of the OC, held at Cal State Fullerton the following weekend. Local meets at the Occidental Invite (5/4) and the Franson Last Chance meet (5/11) wrap up the regular season.
Should any Wave qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary meet, they will head to Fayetteville, Ark. from May 22-25. The NCAA Championships return to the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. from June 5-8.
