Â
The Waves (7-19, 18-30) tried to piece together a comeback against BYU (13-13, 24-28) after scoring seven unanswered runs to get within two, 11-9, but a six-run bottom of the eighth inning for the Cougars gave them insurance with the lead to collect the victory.
Â
BIG WAVES
- Junior infielder Lincoln Orellana (Apple Valley, Calif./Sheldon HS/Hawai'i/American River College) was 3-for-5 on the night including two RBI. Orellana's three hits tie his career-high.
- Senior outfielder Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) was also 3-for-5 including his third home run of the season. Schoen's three hits tie his career-high as well.
- Junior infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) was 2-for-4 including a walk and a RBI.
- Senior catcher Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was 2-for-5 on the night.
- Freshman designated hitter Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) hit his fifth home run of the season, which was a two-run shot. Basseer also had a two-run homer in game one against the Cougars and this is the first time this season he has gone yard in back-to-back games.
GAME RECAP
Â
Lincoln Orellana got the Waves on the board in the top of the first inning after an RBI single to right field, 1-0. BYU answered in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI single of their own to right field to tie the game 1-all. In the top of the third, Orellana gave the Pepperdine the lead back with another RBI single through the right side, 2-1.
Â
The Cougars took back the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring five runs on two hits to make it 6-2. BYU brought in five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to add to their lead, 11-2. Grant Schoen led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo homer to center to make it, 11-3, still in favor of BYU. With two outs, Quintt Landis sent a single back up the middle to bring in Pepperdine's fourth run. On a 1-2 count, Jack Bassseer smacked one out over the left field wall to cut the deficit to five, 11-6.
Â
Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) was hit by a pitch to give Pepperdine a runner with no outs in the top of the eighth inning. Jack Goodman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield HS) and Schoen roped back-to-back singles to load the bases. Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) reached on a fielder's choice that brought in a run to make it 11-7. John Peck then hit a RBI single up the middle to get the Waves back within three, 11-8. The Waves took advantage of a BYU wild pitch to close the lead to two, 11-9. In the bottom of the eighth, the Cougars countered and earned six insurance runs on six hits to extend the lead to 17-9. In the top of the ninth inning, the Waves were retired in order.
