Relay Team Sets New School Record at Bryan Clay

AZUSA, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's and women's track teams broke a new school record at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific on Friday and Saturday at Cougar Stadium, as William Watkins, Ryan Fabian, Spencer Mueller and Ryan Hemphill (Visalia, Calif./RedwoodHS) set the new school record in the men's 4x400m relay in a time of 3:20.72.Â

The previous program record stood at 3:22.78 and was set in 2019 by Connor Shahadi (2019-20), Kieran Halewyn (2018-19), Brandon Davis (2018-20) and Treet Allison (2017-19) at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. The Waves continued on rewriting the program all-time lists and setting new personal records throughout both days as well.

On Friday, the first race of the day was the men's 10,000m with junior Johnathan Flint (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) crossing the line first for the Waves in a time of 30:19.50, which is a new personal record by 7.31 seconds and keeps him second on the all-time list. Graduate student Will Bullock (Marietta, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain HS/Eastern Illinois) also competed in the 10,000m clocking in at 31:44.89, which puts him seventh on the all-time list. The women's 10,000m followed with senior Skyler Danley (Easton, Pa./Easton Area HS) running a personal record time of 38:38.47, which keeps her sixth on the all-time list.

The men's 5,000m was the third race for the Waves on Friday. Freshman Patrick Thomas (Paso Robles, Calif./Mission College Prep) crossed the line at 14:41.19, which is a new personal record by 10.08 seconds and moves to sixth on the all-time list. Freshman Joshua Bergers (Cohasset, Mass./IMG Academy) also ran a personal record in the 5,000m in a time of 14:49.88 and marked his name eighth on the all-time list. In the women's 5,000m, sophomore Eden Mittelsdorf (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood HS) clocked in first with a time of 18:05.29, which beats her personal record by 4.53 seconds and is now eighth on the all-time list. In the women's 800m, senior Olivia Miller (Tallahassee, Fla/Lawton Chiles HS) beat her personal record she set last weekend by 2.03 seconds and is now second on the all-time list with a time of 2:14.48. In the men's 800m, freshman Fabian (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) collected a second-place finish in his heat in a time of 1:52.68, which is a new personal record by 0.57 and keeps him third on the all-time list. Freshman Mueller (Fresno, Calif./Clovis North HS) earned a fourth-place finish in his 800m heat coming in at 1:55.61.

Junior Watkins (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic HS) ran first for the Waves on Saturday in the men's 400m finishing in a time of 50.14. He also ran in the men's 200m in a time of 22.30 and is the current school record holder in the men's 200m that he set last season at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Sophomore Kaley Peterson (Sunnyvale, Calif./Saint Francis HS) competed in the 100m, which was the second race of the day for Pepperdine, coming in at 12.32. In the women's 1,500m, Mittelsdorf and freshman Ashley Eagan (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg HS) both earned new personal records. Mittelsdorf clocked in at 4:54.69, which is 4.06 faster than her previous time and Eagan crossed at 4:59.86, which is 0.97 seconds faster.

In the men's 1,500m Thomas marked a second personal record and marked hiss named fifth on the all-time list with a time of 3:57.65. Thomas beat his previous time by 1.63 seconds. In the final race for the Waves, Miller nearly notched a new school record, but was 0.05 seconds away in the women's 1,500m with a time of 4:34.37. This time is a new personal record and keeps her name second on the Pepperdine all-time list, right behind current head coach Lauren Floris who holds the record.

The Waves did not compete at the Mt. SAC relays this week. Pepperdine will be back on the track in a short week at the Battle in the OC hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, April 20.
