MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team is back on the road and heading to the Bay Area for its next three-game West Coast Conference series with San Francisco starting on Friday, April 14 and concluding Sunday, April 16.

SERIES VS. SAN FRANCISCO: Pepperdine holds the overall series 125-56 over San Francisco. Last season, the Dons defeated the Waves in the three-game series 2-1 in Malibu. Pepperdine and San Francisco went into extra (14) innings in game one, with the Waves collecting a 4-3 win, but the Dons won in games two and three.
LAST GAMES: Pepperdine picked up its first West Coast Conference series win against Saint Mary's, 2-1 at Eddy D. Field Stadium. In game one, the Waves completed the comeback and beat the Gaels 12-10. Pepperdine fell behind 5-0 to Saint Mary's, but rallied back in the third inning scoring four runs and cutting the deficit to one. The Gaels increased their lead in the fifth inning, but the Waves battled back again, trailing only by one. Saint Mary's then added two runs in the top of the seventh before Waves plated five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and never looked back to secure the win.
Ryan Johnson was 3-for-4 and hit his 11th home run of the season.
John Peck was 4-for-5 and three times for the Waves. Peck tied his career-high in hits with four.
Charles Masino was 2-for-5 and brought in four runs including a bases-clearing triple to give the Waves the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Masino's four RBI was a new career-high.
Nick Bonn collected his first win in a Pepperdine uniform in relief.
Jack Baird threw 1.0 innings in relief to earn his third save of the season.
In game two, Saint Mary's evened the series, defeating Pepperdine 8-6. The Waves dropped in the first inning to the Gaels. 3-0, but cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the second inning. Pepperdine held Saint Mary's scoreless after the first inning until the seventh inning when they pulled ahead 5-3. The Waves tied the game twice, but the Gaels plated the go-ahead and added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning to collect the win.
Devon Walczykowski was 3-for-5 and had one RBI.
Cam Conley was 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Conley's three hits tied his career-high.
Gunnar Nichols notched a new career-high in strikeouts, sitting down three Gaels' hitters.
In the rubber match, Pepperdine rolled past Saint Mary's 12-1 to earn the series victory.
Brandon Llewellyn and the Waves held the Gaels scoreless through the first six innings and only allowed Saint Mary's to one hit on the day, which came in the seventh inning. The only run for the Gaels was also in the seventh inning.
Quintt Landis was 3-for-4 and had three RBI. Landis tied his career-high in hits and RBI.
Ryan Johnson was 2-for-3 including his 12th home run of the season. Johnson had two RBI, two walks and scored two runs for the Waves.
Lincoln Orellana had two hits and tied his career-high in RBI with three. Orellana also secured a career-high in runs scored after touching the plate three times. Llewellyn threw a season-high 6.2 innings only allowing one hit and one run, which was unearned and both came in the top of the seventh inning. He struck out four Saint Mary's hitters and had two walks and earned his first win of the season.
On Tuesday, in a midweek matchup against #19 UCLA, the Waves walked it off in the bottom of the ninth to secure an 8-7 win. The Waves and Bruins each scored a run in five out of the nine innings played and were tied three times throughout.
Quintt Landis singled in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and a beauty of a blooper by
Charles Masino brought him around for the victory. Pepperdine and UCLA have each won a midweek contest on their home turf this season. Masino was 3-for-5 and brought in a career-high five RBI.
Grant Schoen was 2-for-4 including his first career home run, which was a two-run shot.
Quintt Landis was also 2-for-4 and crossed the plate twice including scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Bobby Christy threw 4.0 innings and held UCLA to only one run and struck out a career-high three batters.
Jack Baird threw 1.1 innings in relief and earned his second win of the season. Baird only allowed one hit, one run and struck out three Bruins.
RECORD WATCHIN': Ryan Johnson currently has 31 career home runs and is in sole possession of fourth on the Pepperdine career all-time. The current school record in career home runs is 45 and held by Dane Sardinha (1998-00). On the season, Johnson has hit 12 home runs and needs two more to tie for 10th all-time on the single season home runs list.
HONORS: Ryan Johnson notched the season's first West Coast Conference weekly honors for the Pepperdine baseball team when he was named Player of the Week on March 6. He batted a .571 and had an 11 RBI week, while posting back-to-back games with two home runs and five RBI to tie a career-high in RBI. In four appearances last week, Johnson only had two strikeouts and scored seven runs. He ended the week with five homers and a double.
Shane Telfer earned the second West Coast Conference weekly honors for Pepperdine as he was named the Pitcher of the Week on March 27. He threw 6.0 scoreless innings against Gonzaga in the series-opening 15-0 victor en route to his third win of the season. Telfer held the Bulldogs to only two hits and five walks, while earning eight strikeouts, two shy from his career-high.
John Peck collected the third West Coast Conference weekly honors for the Waves being named Player of the Week on April 10. In four games, Peck batted a .550, had a slugging percentage of .850 and helped Pepperdine go 3-1 last week. On April 4 against Cal Poly, Peck was 3-for-5 including a double and two triples. His two triples against the Mustangs was the first time this season he hit two in one game and the second time in his career. In game one of the WCC series against Saint Mary's, Peck was 4-for-5 and scored three runs for the Waves. He also had two hits in game two, brought in two runs and stole a base against the Gaels. On Sunday, in the rubber match, Peck again had two hits versus Saint Mary's including a double.
WCC/NATIONAL LEADERS: The Waves rank top-five in multiple categories on the WCC leaderboards. Pepperdine is second in runs scored (198), second in RBI (182), fifth in hits (270) and fifth in home runs (27).
Pepperdine also has multiple Waves in the top-20 in WCC stats.
Ryan Johnson leads the conference in home runs (12) and on-base percentage (.500), second in slugging percentage (.771), tied for fourth in RBI (29) and seventh in batting average (.352).
Lincoln Orellana is 11th in the conference in on-base percentage (.431).
Greg Mehlhaff is tied for 11th in RBI (23).
Quintt Landis is 16th in on-base percentage (.425).
Jack Basseer is 19th in the WCC in batting average (.316). On the pitching side,
Shane Telfer is second in the WCC in wins (four), third in ERA (2.74) and sixth in strikeouts (41).
Jack Baird is tied for fourth in saves (three).
Johnson ranks 22nd nationally in slugging percentage (.771) and tied for 32nd in home runs (12), nationally.
OFFENSIVE STREAKS: Lincoln Orellana leads the Waves in a reached base streak with 15 straight games.
John Peck has the second longest reached base streak with 14 games and is currently on a six-game hitting streak.
Ryan Johnson is on a 13-game reached base streak.
Jack Basser has reached base in 10 straight games.
