Women's Golf in Second after Two Rounds at Silicon Valley; Romero Tied for First

MILLBRAE, Calif. – The #25 Pepperdine women's golf team is in second after two rounds at the Silicon Valley Showcase on Monday, having shot 3-over and 1-shot behind top-ranked Stanford through 36-holes. Junior Kaleiya Romero will be tied for first heading into the third and final round tomorrow after shooting 3-under in the first two rounds.
 
The Waves have a two-round score of 571 (281-290) at the par-71, 6,061-yard Green Hills Country Club.  The squad outshot fellow West Coast Conference opponent Santa Clara, the team in third, by 30-strokes. 
 
Five of the six Waves who were on the course today finished in the top-8.  In addition to Romero's stellar performance, junior Lion Higo is in fourth and freshman Jeneath Wong and sophomore Lauren Gomez are both tied for eighth.  Competing as an individual, senior Reese Guzman is tied for fifth.
 
PLAYER SCORES
  • Junior Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.) is tied for first with a score of 139 (68-71).  She marked 10 birdies throughout two rounds, including six in the first round.  The 3-under in the first round ties her season-high.
  • Junior Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia) is in fourth with a two-round score of 141 (68-73).  She had four birdies all day, while eagling the fifth.
  • Freshman Jeneath Wong (Melbourne, Australia) is tied for eighth with a score of 146 (74-72).  She put in four birdies, including three in the second round of the day.
  • Sophomore Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.) is tied for eighth with a 146 (72-74).  She put in four birdies in the first round and three in the second.
  • Freshman Yingzhi Zhu (Nanjing, China) is tied for 26th with a score of 154 (73-81).
  • Competing as an individual, senior Reese Guzman (Kahului, Hawai'i) is tied for fifth with a two-round score of 144 (67-77).  She had six birdies in the first round to shoot 4-under, which is one-away from her career-best round.

Tomorrow, the Waves will finish out the Silicon Valley Showcase, teeing off at 8:30 a.m. on holes 1-5.  Pepperdine will be paired with #1 Stanford and tournament-host Santa Clara.
