PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's golf team began the spring season on Sunday, finishing tied for eighth after the first round of the Therese Hession Regional Challenge presented by Northrop Grumman.
The Waves shot an 8-over 292 at the par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club, finishing equal to Kentucky, one shot better than Arizona and three better than Illinois. Pepperdine is six strokes away from second and eight away from the lead.
PLAYER SCORES
- Junior Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.) is tied for sixth place after a 2-under 69. She posted five birdies throughout the day, including a pair on par-5 holes five and 16. She will start the second round three shots out of the lead.
- Sophomore Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.) is tied for 27th after shooting 2-over. She finished strong in the round, shooting two-under in the last six holes and posting two birdies on six and seven.
- Junior Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia) and freshmen Yingzhi Zhu (Nanjing, China) and Jeneath Wong (Melbourne, Australia) finished 4-over and tied for 44th. Higo posted three birdies in the final five holes of the back nine, while Zhu had a birdie on hole 16. Wong began the day even to par through the first seven holes before posting a birdie on hole 17.

Pepperdine will be paired with Oregon, Texas and USC for Monday's second round, starting the day on hole one at 9 a.m.
