SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Pepperdine men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up their seasons at the NCAA West Regional race, held at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, Calif. on Friday.
Competing in one of the nation's toughest regionals, the men's team placed 24th out of 29 schools — an improvement over last year — while the women's team placed 35th out of 37. Individually, three members of the men's team took advantage of running a flat, fast course against steep competition to record new top-20 10-kilometer times: Johnathan Flint (6th all-time, 31:16.2), Patrick Thomas (10th, 31:38.0) and Dominic Silhol (18th, 32:23.7).
For the women, Lizzy Crawford led the Waves once again, placing 118th in the 6-kilometer race with a time of 21:29.3. Crawford (Thornton, Colo./Horizon HS) was the 16th-fastest freshman in the field of 256 runners. She was followed by Elle Shrader (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion HS), who ran a 22:18.4 6-kilometer time to place 183rd. Hannah Bruner (213th), Abby Winter (223rd) and Megan LaCamera (224th) rounded out the scoring runners for the Waves, who relied on underclassmen for most of their scoring runners.
The men's team was led by the aforementioned Flint, who packed up with Will Bullock (Marietta, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain HS) and Thomas (Paso Robles, Calif./Mission College Prep) for the majority of the race before Flint broke away near the 8-kilometer mark. Flint placed 95th, Bullock gave Pepperdine another top 100 finisher at 100th and Thomas placed 119th. Silhol and Gordy Nilsen rounded out the scoring runners for the Waves.
Stanford swept both regional titles, while Gonzaga was the top West Coast Conference team in both races. In the women's race, Gonzaga placed fifth with 173 points thanks to a fourth-place showing from WCC Champion Rosina Machu. Portland (6th, 179 points), San Francisco (15th, 474), Saint Mary's (17th, 495), Santa Clara (20th, 596) and LMU (31st, 851) rounded out the teams ahead of the Waves (35th, 949). The Pepperdine women placed ahead of San Diego (36th, 995 points) and Pacific (37th, 1,185 points) — just as they did at the conference race.
In the men's race, the Gonzaga Bulldogs shocked the rest of the region by taking second behind Stanford, 73-98. Led by WCC Champion and NCAA West Regional runner-up Matt Strangio, the Portland Pilots won the tiebreak over No. 4 California Baptist with 125 points. Santa Clara (9th, 244 points), LMU (11th, 362), San Francisco (14th, 419) and Saint Mary's (23rd, 575) rounded out the teams ahead of the Waves (24th, 629 points), who finished ahead of San Diego (29th, 920 points).
