MALIBU, Calif. – Julia Quinonez of the Pepperdine women's soccer team has been named West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced today. This is the fourth weekly accolade in either the offensive or defensive category for the Waves this season.
The freshman forward tallied two goals and an assist in two games to help Pepperdine defeat Pacific 2-1 and Saint Mary's 3-0 in the second week of conference play. Quinonez recorded her first career game with a goal and an assist against the Gaels and currently ranks second on the squad in goals with four.
The Torrance native gave the Waves a 1-0 lead over the Tigers in the 13th minute of Wednesday's match. Right before the half, Pepperdine capitalized on a foul and successfully converted a penalty kick, courtesy of Kendall Campbell to make it 2-1. Quinonez put up another shot in the second half of the match, and helped the Waves keep the Tigers off the board and collect the victory.
On Saturday against the Gaels, Quinonez sent a beautiful one-hop cross to Tori Waldeck who made her way into the box between two defenders. Off the hop, Waldeck tapped the ball with the top of her right foot into the back of the net to give the Waves a 1-0 lead. With 10 minutes before the half, Tatum Wynalda intercepted a Saint Mary's pass and found the back of the net with a right-footed shot. Just after the break, Quinonez and Waldeck connected again to make it 2-0. Waldeck received a tap pass from Caroline Coleman on the right side of the box. On the run, Waldeck kicked a cross towards the middle of the box and on the SMC deflection, Quinonez dove and headed the ball into the back of the net. Quinonez and Pepperdine dominated the rest of the match to earn the first conference shut out of the season.
The Waves (5-3-5, 2-1-0 WCC) will next visit PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, Oct. 18. The match is set for 7 p.m. and will be live on ESPN+.
