MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (8-3-2, 4-0 WCC) scored a flurry of goals against the San Francisco Dons (3-7-1, 0-4 WCC) in the 5-0 victory Saturday afternoon.
"A lot of people getting on the scoresheet today and I am so very proud of them," Head coach Tim Ward said. "On the flip side the defensive effort was stalwart. Really proud of that performance and that result."
Without a loss at home yet this season, the Waves looked to protect Tari Frahm and keep the streak going against the Dons this afternoon. In the third straight match scoring at least three goals, Pepperdine did just that.
The Waves got after it right after kickoff and in the sixth goal scored in the opening 30 minutes of play this season, Layla Simon scored her first of the year off a beautiful sequence from Julia Quinonez and Kyra Murphy. Just 16 minutes into the match, the Waves held a 1-0 advantage. Unable to tack onto it in the first 45, Pepperdine fended off a concentrated San Francisco offensive push right before the whistle, heading to the bench up 1-0, but down on shots 6-7.
Coming out of halftime, the Waves were not satisfied with the 1-0 lead. Looking to cushion the advantage, Pepperdine kept their foot on the gas, creating opportunities as they kept the ball on the offensive third of the field. In her second assist of the afternoon, Murphy found Quinonez for her 10th goal of the season in the 54th minute for a 2-0 lead.
Not even 10 minutes later, it would once again be Quinonez. Making a sliding shot to send the ball right past the Dons goalkeeper, the senior made it 3-0 Waves thanks to a textbook assist from Ariana Markey.
Although the time was winding down, the Waves' offense was not. Hungry for more, Sam Hosford scored her third of her freshman campaign in the 83rd minute. Freshman Sahanna Potti also secured her first collegiate point in the assist, allowing Hosford to blast the ball into the top netting of the goal.
As the exclamation point on the afternoon, Potti decided she wanted a goal of her own and after an assist from both Kate Ryan and Hosford, it was a freshman sequence start to finish. Potti secured her first collegiate goal in the 87th minute as Pepperdine secured the 5-0 win to move to 5-0-1 in Malibu.
Jillian Medvecky and Ava Hartstein combined for the shutout as Hartstein logged the last six and a half minutes of the match.
