MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (8-4-2, 4-1-0 WCC) dropped the team's first loss in conference to the LMU Lions (5-5-3, 4-0-1 WCC) 1-0 at Tari Frahm Saturday afternoon.
"It hurts," Head coach Tim Ward said. "I thought it was a good performance, we just have to capitalize on our moments."
Outshooting LMU 13-4, the Waves held possession for 70 percent of the match. Eager on offense, Pepperdine was called offsides five times compared to LMU's zero. As the Waves pushed the pace in the first half, the Lions kept it slow and steady.
Going into the half 0-0, both sides were looking to break the deadlock with three shots a piece. Fresh out of halftime, the Waves were right back to pressing for a goal. As Fiona McCormick found Layla Simon right outside the box, Pepperdine thought they had their moment as Simon slotted the ball for Julia Quinonez to poke it in. Recalling the goal due to being offsides, Pepperdine initiated one of their two challenges to stop the clock in the 51st minute. After further review, the call was upheld and it remained scoreless at 0-0.
Losing the ball in the defensive half almost immediately after the VAR review, LMU seized the opportunity and the Lions' sole shot on goal would find the back of the net in the 53rd minute.
Arguably the best chance of the afternoon came from Chloe Brown in the 72nd minute, sending a rocket of a ball towards the goal from outside the box, ricocheting it off the right goal post as the Waves continued to search for the equalizer. LMU's goalie came up with four critical saves as the Pepperdine offense was relentless in pursuit of the equalizer.
Losing the first match of the year at home 1-0, the Waves fall to 5-1-1 in Malibu as well as 4-1-0 in conference play. Fouls were called 13-7 favoring the visiting Lions as the Waves picked up three yellows in the match, with LMU receiving one.
Hitting the road before two more at home, the Waves travel north to Stockton, Calif. Facing the Pacific Tigers Saturday night, the match will be under the lights with a 7 p.m. kickoff slated. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available at www.pepperdinewaves.com.
