STOCKTON, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (9-4-2, 5-1-0 WCC) defeated the Pacific Tigers (1-12-2, 0-4-2 WCC) 1-0 on the road Saturday night to get back in the win column.
"The girls played incredibly well against a much improved Pacific side," Head coach Tim Ward said. "Super proud of the performance and thought on another night we could have had a few more goals. As we enter a tough stretch, we're stoked with the three points and we move on to the next!!"
Outshooting the Tigers 14-6 on the night, Pepperdine put eight on frame to consistently threaten the Tigers throughout the match.
After a handful of looks on goal, the second corner of the night would be the difference early in the first half. Off the set piece by Alex Pendleton, the ball found Peyton Leonard's head, falling to Julia Quinonez, allowing her to net the 12th of her senior season. At the end of the first half, the Waves' goal in the 19th minute would be the only of the match as Pepperdine headed into the half with the 1-0 lead.
With an added urgency, Pacific matched Pepperdine energy in the latter half as the Waves narrowly outside the Tigers 6-4, placing half of the looks on goal. While the visitors looked to add to the 1-0 lead, Pacific's defense held strong and Pepperdine could not break the defensive line down.
Flying home with the win, the Waves are narrowly atop the conference with three matches to go in the regular season. New this year, the top four of the conference will head to the conference tournament, hosted by the number one overall seed.
Home for the next two matches, the Waves turn around to host Santa Clara in Malibu Wednesday afternoon. The match, set for 3 p.m., is a faculty and staff appreciation night. Available to watch on ESPN+ (subscription required), live stats will also be available on www.pepperdinewaves.com.
