MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (9-4-3, 5-1-1 WCC) tied Santa Clara 1-1 (7-2-8, 3-0-4 WCC) Wednesday afternoon in Malibu.
"Really proud of the performance today," Head coach Tim Ward said. "It was a game of few chances, so we will take that point and onto the next."
Going down early, the Waves responded to go toe-to-toe with the Broncos the rest of the match.
Allowing a goal in the fifth minute, Pepperdine bounced back by threatening to equalize immediately. A Bronco foul in the 18th minute in the box gave Julia Quinonez the opportunity to score her 13th on the year and bring the Waves level. Doing just that, the two squads battled to a 1-1 draw going into the half.
With four shots a piece in the latter 45 minutes, both teams were looking to break the deadlock. Lily Stewart, Chloe Brown, and Fiona McCormick placed the ball on frame to force three saves, bringing both team's total shots on goal to four.
Almost dead even on shots, Pepperdine narrowly outshot Santa Clara 12-11, also holding the favorable side of the possession split. Today's result is the first tie of conference play for the Waves while it is the Bronco's fourth.
Narrowly in second place in the WCC with two matches to play, the Waves will look to clinch a berth to the conference's first ever postseason tournament Saturday. The match, set for 12 p.m., is the Great Waves Pumpkin Bash. Taking place on Halloween, Pepperdine will host a "trunk or treat" style gathering pre-game where junior Waves and all kids can come and trick or treat with Pepperdine student athletes. The festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m. pre–match. Starting at noon, the match will be available to watch on ESPN+ (subscription required), with live stats available on www.pepperdinewaves.com.
