MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (9-4-4, 5-1-2 WCC) tied San Diego (5-8-4, 2-4-2 WCC) 2-2 in the last home game of the regular season Saturday afternoon.

"I'm really proud of the girls today as I thought we played very well for large parts of the game. We showed fantastic character to equalize and then go ahead," head coach Tim Ward said. "Although we tied the game, I'm really proud of our women for qualifying and sealing our first ever appearance in the inaugural WCC Women's soccer tournament. Exciting matches to come and we're looking forward to a week of rest and preparation for a tough match up in Nor Cal."

Possessing the ball for the majority of the first half, the Waves opened up the match on Halloween in total control. Looking for the perfect shot, chances on-goal were few and far between. Jillian Medvecky made two saves in goal as both teams headed to the bench deadlocked 0-0 at the half.

Outshot 4-3 in the first half, Pepperdine ramped up the intensity in the latter half, outshooting the Toreros 11-4. With a combined four goals in the latter 45 minutes, the lack of scoring in the opening half was made up for in the second.

The opposition opened up the goal-scoring with an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute. Down 0-1, the Waves equalized almost immediately off a goal from Layla Simon in the 64th minute. This is Simon's second goal of the year, assisted by Peyton Leonard for her second assist of the season.

Scoring in an almost identical fashion, the Waves took the lead in the 76th minute. Ariana Salvador scored off a ball from Alex Pendleton to give Pepperdine their first lead of the match at 2-1 with less than 15 minutes to play.

Anything but deflated, the Toreros responded with an equalizer in the 81st minute. Despite a flurry of Waves offense in the closing minutes of the match, Pepperdine walked away with a 2-2 tie.

Clinching a berth to the inaugural WCC Championship Tournament this afternoon, Pepperdine is joined by LMU and Seattle. The final match across the conference next week will determine the final spot.

Closing out the regular season on the road, the Waves head to Saint Mary's for the final match before postseason play Nov. 7. The match, scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m., will be available to watch on ESPN+ (subscription required), with live stats available on www.pepperdinewaves.com.
