Wong Returns to Malaysia for LPGA Maybank Championship

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine's Jeneath Wong is set to compete at the LPGA Maybank Championship in Wong's home country of Malaysia next week.

"We just finished a very good fall season and I am really excited to play in the Maybank Championship in Malaysia next week," said Wong.  "Competing against the best professionals in the world is a challenge I look forward to. I learned a lot from competing in the U.S. Women's Open at Pebble Beach during the summer.  Playing in the Maybank Championship will allow me to build on that experience."

Wong is one of only two amateurs that received exemptions into the tournament, the other being Jing Xuen Ng, the top junior golfer in Malaysia. The Maybank field will include most of the top LPGA pros, including Pepperdine women's golf alumna Danielle Kang.

"We are excited for Jeneath to play in the Maybank Championship back home in Kuala Lumpur," said Pepperdine women's golf head coach Laurie Gibbs.  "The LPGA Tour is returning to Malaysia and Jeneath will be an excellent representative of her home country and the Pepperdine Waves.  She has been working hard on improving all aspects of her game and I think she is ready to have a great tournament."

The event is being held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from October 26-29.  It will air on the Golf Channel from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. PT on October 25-27, and then on October 28 from 8 p.m. to 1 p.m. PT.

In addition to the collegiate events this year, Wong has also competed at the U.S. Women's Open, U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, U.S. Girls Junior Championship and The Women's Amateur Championship in England.

Wong had one of the best freshman campaigns on record last year for the Waves, helping lead the squad to an NCAA quarterfinal finish.  She marked a 72.72 scoring, which sits atop the Pepperdine women's golf record books for the best freshmen season scoring average in history, having surpassed Danielle Kang's 73.22 from 2009-10.  That scoring average also ranked seventh among all Pepperdine women's golfers in any class in a single season.

This fall, she most recently finished tied for seventh at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate, helping the Waves to their third-consecutive top-three team finish.  She finished tied for 12th at the Golfweek Red Sky and 24th at the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational, a pair of tournaments where Pepperdine took home the team win.  She currently is boasting a 71.88 scoring average this season and has collected four below par rounds.

The Waves have finished up the fall campaign and will return to action February 4-6 at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
