WOLCOTT, Colorado – Behind
Lauren Gomez' 5-under 67, the Pepperdine women's golf team stands in first place after Monday's first round at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic.
Gomez has the individual lead by one shot. The Waves posted an opening score of a 3-under 285 at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club and lead Fresno State and Colorado by two strokes. The Waves' four scoring players went 4-under on holes 17 and 18 to catapult the team into first place.
Pepperdine has won this tournament (when it was known as the Golfweek Conference Challenge) four times, last in 2014.
PLAYER SCORES
- Sophomore Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.) posted her best-ever college round with the 5-under 67. Her round was flawless and she posted birdies on 3, 7, 8, 11 and 18.
- Senior Reese Guzman (Kahului, Hawai'i) is tied for 12th place after a 1-under 71. She birdied 2 and 18 and only had one bogey in between.
- Junior Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia) is tied for 17th after a 72. She birdied the first two holes, and after four bogeys, bounced back with birdies on 15 and 17 to get back to even-par.
- Freshman Jenny Zhu (Nanjing, China) is tied for 56th after a 75. She had an eagle on the par-5 15th and two birdies.
- Junior Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.) is tied for 73rd after a 77. She had an eagle on the par-4 3rd hole and ended her round with birdies on 17 and 18.
UP NEXT
Pepperdine will be paired with Fresno State, Colorado and Xavier for Tuesday's second round and they'll start on the first tee beginning at 11:40 a.m. MT.
