#17 Waves Shut Out #15 USC in Exhibition

MALIBU, Calif. – The #17 Pepperdine women's soccer team shut out #15 USC 2-0 in an exhibition contest on Thursday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field, with freshmen scoring both goals in their debuts.

The Waves (0-0) came out firing and outshot the Trojans (0-0) 21-8, including Pepperdine having 12 shots on goal.

GOALS

Pepperdine 37': Senior midfielder Shelby Little (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Hillcrest Christian HS) sent a right-footed pass to freshman midfielder Kyra Murphy (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King Jr.) who had a header right to freshman forward Melina Livadas (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS). Off the bounce, Livadas tapped it to Murphy who sent a left-footed shot past the USC goalkeeper.

Pepperdine 50': Little tapped a left-footed pass to freshman defender Erin Zeile (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) who was set up perfectly on the right side. Zeile sent a cross to freshman forward Tatum Wynalda (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) who chipped it off her right foot to the left side of the Trojans' keeper.

QUOTABLE

Pepperdine Head Coach Tim Ward said: "First of all, USC has a tremendous program and we have a lot of respect for what they do. Having said that, I thought we played really well today. We created two fantastic goals and hit the bar three times. We also carved out some really good chances for ourselves. It's hard to go 90 minutes without conceding one or two chances against a team like that but I thought we did a nice job. It was really nice for all three keepers to get a shared shutout. The returners did a great job leading and the freshmen came in and were so good, and everybody in between. What a great way to start the season, but it's a scrimmage and we've got a long, long way to go, and we know that. It's a nice way to start the season for sure."
