Winter Ready for NCAA West Preliminary

MALIBU, California – Senior distance runner Karl Winter has continued to make Pepperdine track history by qualifying for the second consecutive year for the NCAA West Preliminary. This year's event is hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.Â
Winter's (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS) first of two possible races in the 1,500 meters is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, May 25. Should he advance to the second and final race in the 1,500, he will run again on Friday, May 27, at 5:15 p.m. His race in the 5,000 meters is scheduled for Friday, May 27 at 8:10 p.m.
In order to advance from the 1,500 meters onto the next round, Winter will need to either finish in the top five of his 12-man heat, or be one of the next four fastest times from the four heats in the first round. Additionally, to continue to move forward in the 5,000 meters, he will need to be in the top five of the 24-man heat in Friday's semifinal round, or run one of the next two fastest times to make the 2022 NCAA Track and Field National Championships.
The meet will be streamed live on the SEC Network+ via the ESPN app.Â

As it stands, Winter's time of 3:39.60 is the fourth-fastest seed time in his 1,500 heat, which includes runners from nine different conferences including the Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC. Three of the runners in Winter's heat, including Winter, have gone sub-3:40 in their collegiate careers.Â
In the 5,000 meters, Winter is positioned in the first heat with a time of 13:46.80, which he set his qualifying time at the Stanford Invitational on April 1.Â
