Gomez, Gibbs Lead WCC Golf Postseason Honors

MALIBU, California – Pepperdine's Lauren Gomez swept all of the West Coast Conference top women's golf awards today, becoming the seventh Wave to win the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors while also being the medalist at the WCC Championships.

Additionally, head coach Laurie Gibbs received co-Coach of the Year honors, her 14th time receiving that award. Gomez was joined on the All-WCC first team by Lion Higo and Kaleiya Romero, a pair of sophomores who both earned spots on the all-league team for the second straight year.

From 1997 to 2009, the medalist at the WCC Championships was automatically named the WCC Player of the Year, and five Waves did that while also collecting the freshman award. Since the change in 2010, for any of the WCC schools, only Pepperdine's Grace Na in 2011 and Gomez in 2022 have accomplished all three in the same year.

Gomez (Murrieta, Calif./Classical Academy) was the highest-ranked player in the league before the WCC Championship began, as she was #84 in Golfstat. She went wire-to-wire and won the league title by three strokes. Gomez has a team-best 73.65 scoring average, which currently ranks fifth on Pepperdine's freshman list. She's tied the Pepperdine freshman record with seven below-par rounds in a season, and her four top-10 finishes and six top-20 results are both tied for fourth.

Higo (Gold Coast, Australia/Saint Stephen's College) tied for third place at the WCC Championships. She is second on the team with a 74.77 scoring average. She tied for 10th at the Gold Rush and has had four top-20 results.

Romero (San Jose, Calif./California Connections Academy) also tied for third place at the WCC Championships, her second straight top-three finish at the event. She won her first college title at the beginning of the season at the Dick McGuire Invitational. She has a 76.42 scoring average this season.

Pepperdine won its 19th WCC title under Gibbs this past Saturday at Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada, beating BYU by 18 strokes. NCAA Regional selections will be announced on Wednesday (April 27) at 1 p.m. PT on the Golf Channel.
