MALIBU, Calif. – The eighth-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis program dominated #18 USC from the first serve on Saturday afternoon, earning a 5-2 rout over the Trojans at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
This was the ninth win in a row for the Waves (10-3) over USC (10-8).
Pepperdine blitzed the Trojans from the beginning of doubles, as the ninth-ranked pair of Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) earned a 6-1 win on court two. The Waves were near a clinch on both courts one and three, and the duo of Anastasia Iamachkine (Lima, Peru) and Taisiya Pachkaleva (Moscow, Russia) secured the doubles point for the Waves with a 6-4 win on court three.
The Waves took five first sets in singles from USC, setting the tone for the remainder of the match. #109 Broadus blew past Grace Piper on court four, 6-2, 6-2 to give Pepperdine a 2-0 lead. #18 Shiori Fukuda (Tokyo, Japan) took the ranked matchup on court one, earning a top-10 win after defeating #6 Eryn Cayetano in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
With Pepperdine leading 3-0, #88 Tjen won a tiebreaker in set two to defeat #60 Snow Han on court three 6-4, 7-6 (5) and clinch the top-20 win for Pepperdine.
Court two completed an abbreviated third set, where #22 Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) won 6-4, 4-6, [11-9] over #29 Salma Ewing.
Courts five and six finished their full third sets, as USC earned wins on both to finish out the afternoon.
