MALIBU, California — The Pepperdine women's golf team stays local for another tournament as the Waves square off against an impressive field at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge starting on Sunday.
EVENT INFO — The Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge will be held at the par-71, 6,017-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club, located in Palos Verdes Estates, California. There will be 18 holes each day between Sunday and Tuesday (March 13-15). There will be live scoring on Golfstat.
FIELD — In addition to Pepperdine, the 16-team field includes host Ohio State, Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Baylor, California, Duke, Georgetown, Kent State, Oregon, Texas, USC, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest. Nine of the teams are in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 25, while 13 are in the top 50.
PEPPERDINE LINEUP — The Waves' lineup consists of sophomore Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia), freshman Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.), graduate student Megan Dennis (Bedfordshire, United Kingdom), junior Reese Guzman (Kahului, Hawai'i) and sophomore Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.).
EVENT HISTORY — This is Pepperdine's 19th appearance at the Regional Challenge since 2000. The Waves won it in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Individual winners include Katherine Hull (2003), Misun Cho (2007) and Lisa McCloskey (2010).
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS — Kaleiya Romero won the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational for her first college victory. She shot a 10-under 206, tying the fourth-best score in program history, and defeated BYU's Lila Galeai on the first hole of a playoff. Romero was named the WCC's Player of the Month for September ... Lauren Gomez leads the Waves with three top-10 finishes, including the Golfweek Red Sky Classic (T-10th), the Stanford Invitational (T-7th) and the Gold Rush (T-10th).
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and 10 overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 26 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
