CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Pepperdine baseball team fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 10-4 on Monday afternoon at Chapman Field.
Even though the hits were even at eight between the Waves (5-3) and Islanders (5-4), Pepperdine left 13 men on base and couldn't get enough rallies going to match Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
BIG WAVES
- Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
- Freshman infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) went 2-for-4 including a double and crossed the plate once.
- Freshman RHP Bobby Christy (Odessa, Fla./Sickles HS) made his Pepperdine debut and threw 3.0 scoreless innings and struck out two batters.
- Junior LHP Shane Telfer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings and struck out six batters while giving up one hit.
GAME RECAP
In the bottom of the first inning, the Islanders took an early 3-0 lead. The Waves answered back in the top of the second inning after back-to-back walks from
Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) and
Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) and a two-out RBI single up the middle by
Jacob Rebrook (The Woodlands, Texas/ The John Cooper School) to get Pepperdine within two at 3-1. The Islanders put up five runs in the bottom of the second on three hits to make it 8-1.
After three scoreless innings from both sides, Conley led off the sixth inning with a double down the line to left field. Rebrook followed up with another hit to give the Waves runners on the corners. Peck hit a sacrifice pop fly to right field which scored Conley for the Waves' second run, with the Islanders still leading 8-2. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored two more runs at the bottom of the sixth, to go up 10-2.
Two walks for the Waves started the eighth inning and both runners advanced into scoring position after an Islanders' balk.
Nolan Lingley (Tracy, Calif./Ripon Christian School) scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-3. Pepperdine had a runner on third with no outs and Peck at the plate. Peck hit a chopper for a single to the shortstop, which scored the fourth run for the Waves at 10-4. Pepperdine was unable to get it going in the final inning.
