Waves Perform Well & Set New School Records at Rossi Relays

CLAREMONT, California – The Pepperdine men and women's track competed in its first outdoor meet of the season at the Rossi Relays hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Burns Track Complex on Saturday morning. The Pepperdine men broke two school records and garnered a new school record competing in the sprint medley relay for the first time.

Highlighting the meet was senior Karl Winter (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS), sophomore Ryan Hemphill (Visalia, Calif./Redwood HS), and freshmen Jakob Knox (Bend, Ore./Bend Senior HS) and Colin Proctor (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS), who notched a new school record and first-place finish in the 4x800 meter relay in a time of 7:45.13, which was 25 seconds faster than the previous school record.

Winter, senior Kyle McCabe (Westminster, Colo./Holy Family HS), sophomore Austin Gromer (Casper, Wyo./Mountain View HS) and freshman Thomas Lewer (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Steamboat Springs HS) also set a new school record in the distance medley relay, clocking in at 10:21.18, which was 29 seconds faster than the previous record.

Junior Jaad Abduljawad (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia/Cal Coast Academy), sophomore William Watkins (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic HS), Lewer and Knox competed in the sprint medley relay for the first time in program history and established a new school record in a time of 1:37.33, which was good for a fourth-place finish. Watkins and Abduljawad were also neck-in-neck in the 100 meters for the Waves, with Watkins collecting a time of 11.244 and Abduljawad in 11.246.

On the women's side there were a number of strong finishes, including senior Riley Wright (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol HS), junior Olivia Miller (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS), junior Skyler Danley (Easton, Pa./Easton Area HS) and sophomore Paula Leigh (Livermore, Calif./Granada HS) with a fourth-place place finish in the 4x800 meter relay, finishing in a time of 9:48.56, which was only 0.15 short of the school record that was set in 2014.

Freshman Kaley Peterson (Sunnyvale, Calif./Saint Francis HS) was the top performer for the Waves in the 100 meters with a time of 12.17, which was good for sixth place and fourth on the Pepperdine all-time performance list. Senior Tiffany Egbo (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) competed in the 400 meter hurdles clocking in at 1:07.36, which marked her named in seventh place. In addition, freshman Maddy Ortman (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor Christian HS) ran in the 100 meter hurdles finishing in a time of 16.48, which was good for 10th and also seventh on the Pepperdine all-time performance list.

Senior Key Pearson (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Vistamar School), Leigh, freshman Eden Mittelsdorf (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood HS), senior Annelies Ondersma (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett School) and Wright represented Pepperdine in the women's distance medley relay posting a time of 13:37.47.
