MALIBU, California – The #7 Pepperdine women's tennis program earned a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships by blanking Notre Dame, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Much like yesterday's 4-0 first-round win over Columbia, Pepperdine (2-1) had no trouble with doubles, as the pairs of
Shiori Fukuda (Tokyo, Japan) and
Anastasia Iamachkine (Lima, Peru) along with
Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and
Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) both won respective matches without dropping a game to clinch the doubles point for Pepperdine.
In singles, Pepperdine needed only about an hour to take care of the Irish (3-2), as the Waves claimed six first-set wins. Tjen was the first winner from the four spot, defeating Nibedita Ghosh, 6-3, 6-1. Soon after,
Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) defeated Page Freeman, 6-4, 6-0, on court two, and the freshman Broadus took court five over Maria Castedo by a score of 6-1, 6-3 to give Pepperdine the team victory.
The ITA National Team Indoor Championships will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin from February 10-14. The winner of each of the 15 regional sites, along with the host, Wisconsin, will participate in the championships. Game times and opponents are to be determined.
