MALIBU, California – The defending NCAA runner-up and #2 Pepperdine women's tennis program opens the 2022 dual campaign with a home match against #9 California at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

SERIES HISTORY: Cal holds the all-time series lead against Pepperdine 34-11, including a 13-3 record in Malibu. Pepperdine has won four straight dating back to the 2019 season, including a 2-0 record against the Bears in 2021.

Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) was one of the top performers for the Waves this fall, as she claimed the singles title at the ITA Southwest Regional on her way to a 13-4 fall singles record. Zaar found success in doubles as well with a record of 8-3 and a finals berth with Flores in the ITA Southwest Regional as well. She looks to carry momentum over from her strong sophomore season, where she earned All-WCC honorable mention honors in both singles and doubles while earning WCC All-Academic first team. From February 13 to May 19, Zaar won 19 straight singles matches and had the clinch point in the road win over #25 Stanford on April 2.

Taisiya Pachkaleva (Moscow, Russia) begins her second year in Malibu after an impressive fall that saw her knock off the top seed at the ITA All-American Championships while advancing to the semifinals of that event. Pachkaleva earned a singles record of 8-2 in the fall. As a freshman, she was named the ITA Regional Rookie of the Year in 2021 while earning the WCC Freshman of the Year honor. Pachkaleva was All-WCC first team in singles and All-WCC honorable mention in doubles. Pachkaleva won the clinch point against previously unbeaten North Carolina to send the Waves to the national championship match for the first time.

Victoria Flores (Fort Dodge, Iowa) completed her first fall in Malibu in style, advancing all the way to the consolation final of the ITA All-American Championships. She and Zaar were also finalists of the doubles competition at the ITA Southwest Regional. A Georgia Tech transfer, she burst onto the scene as a junior in 2019-20, earning ITA doubles All-American honors. During that season, she was ranked as high as #6 nationally in ITA doubles rankings while coming in at #41 in singles. In her last season in Atlanta, Flores earned at-large berths to both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships after being named All-ACC second team.

Shiori Fukuda (Tokyo, Japan) claimed the singles and doubles titles at the Jack Kramer Invite this fall on her way to a singles record of 12-3. She also took home the singles title at the Freeman Memorial Championship in Las Vegas. Fukuda returns for her final season in Malibu after earning All-WCC first team honors in both singles and doubles with the Waves in 2021. The Ohio State transfer was an ITA All-American with the Buckeyes in 2020 while being named the 2020 Ohio State Big Ten Athlete of the Year.

Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) readies for her first spring season at Pepperdine after a wildly successful fall campaign. The 2019 Junior Wimbledon doubles champion and 2020 Junior Australian Open doubles semifinalist went 12-2 in singles in the fall while winning the singles title at the Battle of the Bay. The pair of Broadus and
Anastasia Iamachkine (Moscow, Russia) claimed the doubles title at the Battle of the Bay, and Broadus also won the doubles title at the Jack Kramer Invite with Fukuda.

Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) enters her first season in Malibu after playing her freshman season at Oregon. This fall with the Waves, she had a singles record of 3-2, and went a combined 5-2 in doubles with Flores and Broadus. She became just the third player in Oregon program history to earn ITA All-America status following her historic freshman season, where she ended the season at #6 in the ITA singles rankings. Tjen was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year after advancing to the national semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
California enters 2022 after a 19-7 dual campaign in 2021, including a 7-3 record in the Pac-12. The Bears, champions of the Pac-12 for the first time, were a Sweet 16 participant before falling to North Carolina 4-0 in Orlando. Cal is led by Amanda Augustus in her 15
th season in Berkeley. She has amassed an overall coaching record of 250-83 and was the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2021.
