#3 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Erskine Again

MALIBU, California – The #3 Pepperdine men's volleyball team posted 14 service aces, just two shy of the school record, as the Waves swept Erskine for the second straight day, 25-17, 25-16, 25-16, on Friday night in Firestone Fieldhouse.
 
Pepperdine (2-0) hit well again, posting a .443 success rate to .211 for Erskine (0-4).
 
BIG WAVES
  • Graduate opposite Jaylen Jasper (Annapolis, Md./Stanford) had a team-high 10 kills along with three block assists and two service aces.
  • Graduate middle blocker Austin Wilmot (Valley Village, Calif./Crespi Carmelite HS/UC Irvine) had five kills and three block assists.
  • Graduate outside hitter Spencer Wickens (Irondequoit, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit HS) had five kills and two service aces.
  • Sophomore setter Bryce Dvorak (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) handed out 32 assists and tied his career high with four service aces.
  • Making his Pepperdine debut, redshirt freshman outside hitter Joe Deluzio (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) had a team-high four digs, three service aces and two kills.
PLAY BY PLAY
 
At 4-3 in the first set, the Waves ran off four straight points, which included a kill and ace by Jasper. The lead grew to six at 13-7 off a Wickens service ace. The teams traded points the remainder of the set until a kill by Dvorak and an ace by Deluzio ended the set. Nine of Erskine's 17 points came off Pepperdine service errors.
 
Aces by Dvorak and Wickens helped Pepperdine off to a 7-1 lead in the second set. An ace by sophomore middle blocker Andersen Fuller (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius HS) made it 13-7, and an Erskine attack error pushed the lead to 15-8. At 20-14, Pepperdine ran off four straight points, including another ace by Fuller, and the second set eventually ended on a kill by Wickens.
 
Erskine took its first and only lead of both matches when the Fleet scored the first point of set three, but Pepperdine ran off the next five points, two coming off Dvorak service aces. A Wilmot ace made it 9-3, and a Jasper ace extended the lead to 11-4. Redshirt senior opposite Mason Tyler (Queen Creek, Ariz./Perry HS) collected the first two kills of his career in the set, including one that doubled up Erskine's lead at 20-10. The match eventually ended with three straight Pepperdine points: a kill by Deluzio, a kill by senior outside hitter Ben Weinberg (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) and an ace by Deluzio.

  • The school record for service aces is 16 against BYU in the 2001 season. The 14 tonight tied the second-most in program history.
  • These were the first-ever meetings between Pepperdine and Erskine. Thursday's set scores were 25-9, 25-19, 25-15.
