9/30/2021 1:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MALIBU, California – Joelle Anderson of the #6 Pepperdine women's soccer team was named one out of 30 women's soccer candidates for the 2021 Senior CLASS Award today.
The Senior CLASS Award looks at men's and women's soccer student-athletes who are classified as a NCAA Division I senior or graduate student in four specific areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. There will be 10 finalists named later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character, and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2021 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships in December.
Anderson (San Jose, Calif./The Harker School), a redshirt senior forward, was selected in the third round of the 2021 NWSL Draft by the Houston Dash, though she will finish her college career and graduate at Pepperdine before pursuing a professional career. She will graduate in the fall of 2021 with a major in psychology and a minor in social work and currently holds a 3.47 grade-point average. She has received West Coast Conference All-Academic honorable mention honors in 2019 and 2020 and also received WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll status and Pepperdine Scholar-Athlete acclaim each of her four years as a Wave. Anderson is also committed to her community and has participated in soccer clinics for those families who were impacted by the Woolsey Fire as well as she has written letters to Special Olympic athletes who were unable to attend the Olympics due to COVID-19. She also has participated in numerous Step Forward Days, which is the University's annual day of service.
Not only has Anderson shown excellence in the classroom and throughout her community, she has been a vital part of the women's soccer team. She has collected 30 goals, 18 assists and 78 points thus far as a Wave. She has sole possession of fourth on Pepperdine's career goals list, one of seven categories on the all-time lists where she's in the top 10. Anderson has been named to the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list and WCC Offensive Player of the Week for two consecutive weeks (Sept. 6 and Sept. 14) so far this season. She finished non-conference play with six goals and two assists, while three out of six goals were game-winners, including the lone goal against Texas A&M. Anderson has helped the Waves to the second-best start in program history at 9-1-0 (in 2005 the Waves began 9-0-1 but lost the next game) and the first in program history to win the first seven road games.
The Waves open up WCC play hosting Portland on Saturday (October 2) at 1 p.m.. The matchup will be streamed on the WCC Network.
