MALIBU, California – Jan Zidek, a rising junior on the Pepperdine men's basketball team, is currently taking part in a Czech Republic national team camp ahead of the country's upcoming Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
The training camp includes two games in the Czech Republic against Finland (June 12-13). A tournament in Germany follows, and then the Olympic Qualifying Tournament runs from June 29-July 4 in Canada. The Czech Republic has yet to play in an Olympics since the team was founded in 1993.
Zidek was one of 18 players named to the camp roster. He's one of two athletes currently playing NCAA college basketball along with David Bohm of Northern Kentucky. The other 16 are professionals, including Tomas Satoransky of the Chicago Bulls and Jan Vesely, who played three years in the NBA and was the 2019 EuroLeague MVP. Olympic rosters consists of 12 people.
Zidek ranked third on the Waves with a 9.4 scoring average as a 2020-21 sophomore. He made 37 three-pointers, third on the team. Zidek appeared in 22 games and made seven starts. He scored a season-high 26 points at San Diego on February 27 and made eight three-pointers, one shy of the school record. He posted two double-doubles on the season.
Pepperdine finished the 2020-21 season with a 15-12 record and won the College Basketball Invitational championship.
