SAN MATEO, Calif. – Guy Den Ouden and head coach Adam Schaechterle of the #28 Pepperdine men's tennis team highlighted the All-West Coast Conference awards on Thursday afternoon with Den Ouden earning Freshman of the Year honors and Schaechterle being named the Coach of the Year.
Â
In addition, Den Ouden and Adrian Oetzbach were named to the All-WCC Singles First Team as Daniel De Jonge and Tim Zeitvogel were awarded Singles Second Team and Honorable Mention status respectively.
Â
On the doubles side, partners Den Ouden and Oetzbach earned First Team status, as Corrado Summaria and Zeitvogel garnered honorable mention.
Â
After leading the Waves in wins this season, the freshman Den Ouden posted a slick 15-3 record, going undefeated in WCC play at 7-0 all on courts two and three. He finished the regular season on another high note with an 11-match winning streak. The freshman also earned WCC Player of the Week on April 6.
Â
Schaechterle has led a complete U-turn of the Pepperdine men's tennis program that saw only seven wins prior to the coaching turnover in 2018. Last season, though shortened due to COVID-19, the Waves went 11-0 and ended the abrupt year as the only undefeated team in the country. In 2021, Schaechterle led Pepperdine to a 15-6 season and an unbeaten 8-0 record in WCC play, putting the Waves back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.
Â
Fellow first-teamer Oetzbach entertained tough competition all season at the court one position, as well as De Jonge who posted a 10-5 record on courts two and three. Zeitvogel has famously gone undefeated since March 17, 2019, and earned seven-straight this season.
Â
Doubles tandem Den Ouden and Oetzbach are currently ranked #77 in the country, going 7-3 on the season on court one. Summaria and Zeitvogel went 5-2, earning WCC Team of the Week on April 20.
