BATON ROUGE, La. - March Madness? Try May Madness. No. 27 Pepperdine men's tennis (19-9, 6-1 WCC) stunned the college tennis world with a 4-3 win over No. 7 LSU (26-7, 10-4 SEC) to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals.
"We came into the NCAA tourney feeling like we had some special moments we hadn't experienced yet," said Director of Tennis Adam Schaechterle. "So much fun to watch these boys produce tonight. Down a doubles point, on the road, tough crowd, and an elite opponent. These hungry dogs wanted to make a statement and they did."
The Waves would starve for more after falling in the doubles point. Lasse Poertner and Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida dropped their doubles match on two before Maxi Homberg and Aleksa Pisaric defeated Enzo Kohlman and Olaf Pieczkowski, 6-4. It all came down on flight one but the 15th-ranked dynamic of Sasa Markovic and Andrej Loncarevic beat 49th-ranked Edward Winter and David Fix, 6-4, putting Pepperdine in a 1-0.
To start singles, No. 34 ranked Erick Arutiunian defeated Poertner in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) on flight two, extending LSU's lead over Pepperdine to 2-0.
Maxi Homberg would begin to help the Waves turn the tide against the Tigers with a victory on five over Alessio Vasquez. Homberg took a 1-0 advantage after the first game but dropped the second. The senior made it look easy in the third, winning handedly 6-1 to put Pepperdine on the board.
Edward Winter battled hard on flight one, forcing a third set against 26th-ranked Olaf Pieczkowski, but was ultimately blanked 6-0 in the final game as Pepperdine faced a 3-2 deficit.
With their backs against the wall, the Waves wouldn't back down. Almeida came through in the clutch, delivering a 6-2 victory in the third set on flight four, defeating Matias Ponce De Leon.
Down to their last breath, Pisaric was masterful, stunning the packed LSU Tennis Complex with a 6-2 win in the third set over 111th-ranked Andrej Loncarevic. Pisaric delivered the clinching point and punched Pepperdine's ticket to the Super Regionals for the first time since 2013.
