MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team played its final game of the season on Saturday, defeating Pacific 16-2.
The Waves finish the year with a 20-25 win-loss record, going 12-15 in West Coast Conference play.
BIG WAVES
- Junior infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) went a perfect 5-for-5 on the day, including an RBI single and two-run home run.
- Senior outfielder Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) went 3-for-4 on the day, with five RBI.
- Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) had four hits and six RBI on the day.
- Sophomore LHP Nathan Diamond (Oak Park, Ill./Lake and River Forest HS) was stellar on the mound, not allowing a single run over seven innings, striking out seven batters and surrendering just one walk.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got things going in the first as both Young and
Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) singled to start the game. Modlin hit a single up the middle scoring both runners, putting the Waves up 2-0 through one inning.
In the second inning,
Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) walked to lead the inning off.
Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) and
Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) both singled to load the bases. Young then got an infield single, scoring Lutes. Cook then singled in two more to give the Waves a 5-0 lead through two innings.
After Young doubled in the top of the fourth, Cook doubled him in to extend the Waves' lead to 6-0 through four innings.
Young and Alexiades both got two-out singles in the sixth inning, and Cook was hit by a pitch before Modlin drove in two runs with a single to give the Waves an 8-0 lead through six innings.
In the seventh, Lutes scored on a bases loaded walk issued to Alexiades. A bases-loaded single from Cook plated two more, bringing his RBI total to five on the day and the Waves' lead to 11-0.
A bases loaded single in the bottom of the eighth got the Tigers on the board, but the Waves led 11-2 after eight innings.
In the top of the ninth,
Michael Winaker () hit the first home run of his career to put the Waves up 12-2. Young then followed up with a two-run home run of his own to push the lad to 14-2. Modlin then joined the home run parade, hitting a two-run shot of his own, and the Waves led 16-2.
The lead would hold as the Waves finished their season with a road victory.
