Â
The Waves (18-24, 10-14 WCC) got the scoring started early, but the Cougars (23-27, 15-12 WCC) answered quickly, taking a lead that they would never relinquish.
Â
BIG WAVES
- Senior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) had a heck of a day, going 4-for-5 with three home runs and five RBI. It is the first time a Pepperdine baseball player has hit three home runs in a game since David Newhan did it in 1995.
- Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 3-for-4 on the day with three singles and an RBI.
- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) went 2-for-3 on the day with two singles and a double.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Cook opened the scoring up early for the Waves, hitting his team and West Coast Conference-leading 14th home run of the year. The Cougars answered with a solo shot of their own in the home half to tie the game. After a single, another home run gave BYU a 3-1 lead through one inning.
Â
Back-to-back solo home runs for the Cougars extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI single pushed the BYU lead to 6-1 through two innings.
Â
In the top of the third, Cook hit his second home run of the game, this one off the scoreboard in left field, cutting the Cougar lead to 6-3 and scoring Wyatt Young, who singled. BYU led 6-3 through three innings of play.
Â
A two-run triple in the bottom of the fourth gave the Cougars an 8-3 lead. A single then brought in their ninth run. The Cougars got a bases-loaded double that scored three to extend the lead to 12-3 through four innings.
Â
In the fifth, Young singled before Cook hit his third home run of the day, getting the game to 12-5 in favor of the Cougars through five innings.
Â
Cook led off the seventh inning with a single and was moved to second on a Justin Lutes walk. Reese Alexiades then shot a ball through the right side to score Cook and cut the Cougars lead to 12-6. BYU answered with a two-run home run to take a 14-8 lead through seven innings.
