Box Score PROVO, Utah – The Pepperdine baseball team opened up its penultimate series of the year with a 6-3 victory over BYU on Thursday night. Every batter in Pepperdine's lineup had at least one hit on the night.
The Waves (18-22, 10-12 WCC) got home runs from
Justin Lutes, Aharon Modlin and
John Peck and proved too much for the Cougars (21-27, 12-12 WCC).
BIG WAVES
- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) opened up the scoring with a solo shot in the first inning.
- Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the fifth inning to retake the lead.
- Freshman infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) went 2-for-4 including a solo home run off the scoreboard in the seventh inning to extend the Waves' lead.
- Freshman RHP Brandon Llewellyn (Colleyville, Texas/IMG Academy) threw five innings, giving up three runs and striking out four, not surrendering a walk.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got on the board first in the second inning on a deep fly ball to straight away center field from Lutes to give the Waves a 1-0 lead. BYU answered in the bottom half with a 2-run double to take a 2-1 lead through two innings.
In the top of the fifth, The Waves got a single up the middle from
Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute)
. Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) then drew a seven pitch walk before Modlin hit a three-run home run deep into left field to give the Waves a 4-2 lead. BYU got a run back in the bottom half with a solo home run. Pepperdine led 4-3 through five innings.
After
Ryan Johnson singled and reached second on a wild pitch,
Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) singled into center field, bringing Johnson around to score. Pepperdine led 5-3 through six innings.
With two outs in the seventh, Peck hit a ball off the scoreboard in left to extend the lead to 6-3 in favor of the Waves through seven innings.
The Cougars loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but
Trevor Hinkel (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) closed the door with a strikeout.
