Waves Can’t Complete Comeback in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – For the second game in a row, the Pepperdine baseball team nearly completed a comeback against San Diego, falling 7-6 on Saturday night.

The Waves (14-18, 6-8 WCC) got back-to-back home runs from Justin Lutes and Billy Cook in the fourth inning and tried to mount a comeback in the ninth, but the Toreros (27-8, 13-4 WCC) had a five-run first inning, which was too much for the Waves to overcome.

The Waves got the scoring started early, as Wyatt Young led the game off with a double and was singled in by Aharon Modlin. San Diego then scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth and to take a 5-1 lead through an inning.

Justin Lutes then doubled to right center, scoring Ryan Johnson who walked to lead off the second inning. Lutes then scored on a throwing error, cutting the Toreros' lead to 5-3 through two innings.

In the third, the Toreros got two more runs to take a 7-3 lead through three innings.

In the fourth inning, Lutes and Billy Cook hit back-to-back solo shots to cut the lead to just two runs.

The Waves mounted a valiant comeback in the ninth inning. With one out, Reese Alexiades singled. Then John Peck drew a nine-pitch walk to put runners on first and second with two outs. Connor Bradshaw doubled down the left field line, scoring Alexiades and putting runners on first and third. A ground ball to the shortstop ended the threat, securing the victory for the Toreros.
