Â
The Waves (14-19, 6-9 WCC) led for the majority of the game, but a five-run ninth for the Toreros (28-9. 14-4 WCC) gave them the walk-off victory.
Â
BIG WAVES
- Senior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) had the best game of his season thus far, going 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
- Sophomore utility Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.
- Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 3-for-5 with two doubles.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Toreros struck first in the first inning on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead through an inning of play.
Â
Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) led the second inning off with a walk and was moved to second on a Cook single. Then, Johnson hit a towering fly ball to deep left field, over the fence for a three-run home run, giving the Waves a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the third, a sacrifice fly and an RBI triple tied the game at three. The Toreros then took the lead on an RBI double. They led 4-3 through two innings of play.
Â
In the third inning, Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) led the inning off with a walk and was moved to third on an Modlin double. John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) then hit a sacrifice fly to score Alexiades. Lutes was then intentionally walked, bringing up Cook who promptly hit a long fly ball deep into left field, over the fence for a go-ahead three-run home run to give the Waves a 7-4 lead through three innings.
Â
The Waves added to the lead in the fifth inning on a Lutes double to score Peck, who singled to lead off the inning. Johnson then singled in Lutes to extend the Waves' lead to 9-4. San Diego got a run back in the home half on a passed ball, and the Waves led 9-5 through five.
Â
San Diego loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but Dylan Schwartz (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS), who came in for Brandon Llewellyn (Colleyville, Texas/IMG Academy), who threw 3.2 innings in relief, shut the door with a strikeout and a groundout to strand all three runners.
Â
In the ninth, the Toreros loaded the bases again, and a bases-clearing double got San Diego to within a run. An RBI single tied the game at nine. A bases-loaded hit by pitch ended the game. Â
