SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team fell in its first game with San Diego 8-3 on Friday evening.

The Waves (14-17, 6-7 WCC) tried to mount a comeback in the late innings, but the Toreros (26-8, 12-4 WCC) had gotten out to too large a lead.

BIG WAVES

Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) had the best day at the plate for the Waves, going 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 2-for-5 at the plate and was the only other Wave to have multiple hits.
Sophomore utility Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) went 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
Freshman outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) had a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Toreros jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first run of the game on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead through an inning of play.

In the fourth, San Diego added another run on an RBI double down the left field line. A sacrifice fly got another run across, giving the Toreros a 3-0 lead through four innings.

Two more runs scored on a single up the middle in the sixth inning for the Toreros. A two-run home run extended the lead to 7-0. An errant throw on a back-pick made it 8-0 San Diego through six innings.

The Waves got on the board in the top of the seventh. Alexiades shot a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pauling HS) who led the inning off with a walk. He got to second thanks to a single from Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/ Mid-Pacific Institute). San Diego led 8-1 through seven innings.

Pepperdine added a run in the eighth thanks to an RBI double from Johnson, who scored John Peck from second after leading off the inning with a single. Masino got a pinch-hit RBI single to score Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) and cut the lead to 8-3 through eight innings.
