MALIBU, Calif. – The seventh-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team will trek to the Bay Area for two high-octane non-conference matches this weekend before taking on more West Coast Conference schools.
MATCH #14: #7 Pepperdine (11-2) at #25 Stanford (10-0) | Friday, April 2 | 11 a.m. | Palo Alto, Calif. | Livestream & Scoring
MATCH #15: #7 Pepperdine (11-2) at #23 Cal (12-3) | Sunday, April 4 | 12 p.m. | Berkeley, Calif. | Livestream
SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
Stanford began their season a little late, playing their first dual match the last week of February. That match was the beginning of a 10-match win streak that the Cardinal will attempt to keep against the Waves.
25th-ranked Stanford- a traditional tennis powerhouse- is the current reigning champion in the world of women's tennis, having won five of the last ten NCAA championships. Most recently, they've taken down the likes of #25 Arizona State, #47 Washington State and #49 Washington, but have yet to take on a top-10 opponent this season.
Michaela Gordon leads the Cardinal in the rankings at #48 as the only ranked player on the team.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
The then-#5 Waves and then-#20 Bears competed just a week ago, resulting in a 6-1 win for Pepperdine in Malibu.
The pairs of Jessica Failla and Shiori Fukuda and Lisa Zaar and Taisiya Pachkaleva earned the doubles point for Pepperdine, going 6-4 and 6-2 on their respective courts. Pachkaleva then defeated #43 Julia Rosenqvist on straight sets on court two, followed by Lexi Ryngler on court five and Nikki Redelijk who clinched the match for the Waves.
Haley Giavara is the lone ranked player for Cal at #41.
SURF REPORT
The #7 Waves are coming off a 2-0 WCC kickoff weekend, defeating Santa Clara 7-0 and San Francisco 6-1 on Friday and Saturday.
Failla and Fukuda earned the conference's Doubles Team of the Week accolade as the pair has gone undefeated since February 5.
To the tune of unbeatens, freshman phenom and #115th-ranked Pachkaleva has not dropped a match since the same date, going 12-1 on the season on anywhere from singles five to two and besting two higher-ranked opponents on the way.
Until last week, #14 Failla had gone undefeated as well, defeating the likes of #48 Eryn Cayetano (USC), #13 Kenya Jones (GT), #7 Abbey Forbes (UCLA), #22 Angela Kulikov (USC), #105 Alana Wolfberg (OKST), #19 Jada Hart (UCLA) and #103 Naomi Cheong (USC).
UP NEXT
The #7 Waves will head back up to the Bay Area for WCC play, taking on Saint Mary's and Pacific in Moraga and Stockton on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10.
