Pepperdine Track Makes Second Trip to Westmont Saturday
3/26/2021 10:14:00 AM | Track
Malibu, Calif. — After a 20-day break between meets, the Pepperdine track team will be back in action this Saturday at the Westmont Classic, which starts at 10 a.m.
This will be the Waves' second meet at Westmont this season: Pepperdine kicked off its outdoor track season at the Sunshine Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 13. At that meet, junior distance runner Karl Winter (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS) broke the school record in the men's 5,000-meter run.
Currently, 14 schools are scheduled to attend Saturday's meet, including five Division I schools. The Waves' D1 competition includes fellow WCC program Pacific, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Bakersfield out of the Big West, plus the Idaho State Bengals, whose men's and women's outdoor track teams were picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, in the Big Sky's outdoor track preseason polls released earlier this week.
Spectators will not be permitted at the meet, but the action will be livestreamed on www.athletics.westmont.edu/video.
LAST LAP
The sprinters led the way during Pepperdine's last meet. At the Central California Invitational, graduate transfer Kennedy Kerr (West Hempstead, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) ran the third-fastest 100-meter dash in Pepperdine program history. Over on the men's side, freshman William Watkins (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic HS) moved up to fourth on the program's top-five 400-meter dash times.
Over on the distance side, junior Kyle McCabe (Westminster, Colo./Holy Family HS) moved into fourth on the men's program's all-time 5K leaderboard with his 14:43.22 finish. Additionally, Annelies Ondersma (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett School) won her heat of the women's 1,500-meter run, plus Winter nearly pulled off a 800-1,500 double. Winter won the 1,500 meters and placed second in the 800, yet his 800-meter time was 36-hundredths of a second off the program record.
