#4 UCLA Downs #7 Pepperdine in Pair of Duals

MALIBU, Calif. – The #7 Pepperdine beach volleyball team was felled in a pair of matches by #4 UCLA in Malibu on Thursday. Though Brook Bauer and Carly Skjodt highlighted the day with a three-set win on court two in the first dual, the Bruins would take 4-1 and 5-0 victories before the day was over.

The Waves (2-9) now head to Irvine for a pair of duals against #6 LMU and unranked host Concordia on Saturday.

The first flight of the first dual had some high Waves' energy to open. Though the Calista Wright and Mary Sinclair took a big first 21-13 set off their opponents on four, the Bruins came back in the second and third sets to take the first point of the day.Â

After dropping the first set 17-21, Brook Bauer and Carly Skjodt rallied back in the second with a 21-19 win to force a third. The Waves and Bruins went point-for-point en route to extra points, but Pepperdine was able to secure the 18-16 victory to put the home squad on the board 1-1 heading into the second flight.

In the second flight, UCLA took all three first sets. Though Sutton Mactavish and Alexis Filippone fought hard, 23-21 and 22-20 final scores gave the Bruins the win and with other victories on courts one and five, the opposition won the dual 4-1.

In the second dual of the day, the Bruins took a quick win on four to get on the board. After Bauer and Skjodt took a first set 21-19 win on two, the opposition rallied to force a third. As in the first dual on this court, it was point-for-point and past extra points. After an 18-18 tied score, the Bruins put two down to take the win and make it 2-0 heading into the second flight.

In the second flight, UCLA had the edge from start to finish, collecting two-set wins on all three courts to complete the sweep and end the day.

On Saturday, the Waves will make the trip to Irvine, Calif. to take on PCH Cup rival #6 LMU and unranked Concordia at 12 and 2 p.m.
