MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team had an offensive explosion in game one of a double header with UC Davis on Saturday, winning 15-0. In game two, the two teams kept it closer with the Aggies coming out on top 5-3.
The Waves (4-9) had a seven-run second inning in game two and kept the pace for the entire game, scoring eight more runs over the next five innings of play.
BIG WAVES
- Freshman utility John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had his best day of the season so far, going 4-for-4 in the first game and 6-for-9 overall on the day. In game one, he was just a triple shy of the cycle, as he hit a two-run home run over the left-field wall. He drove in three runs
- Freshman RHP Trevor Hinkel was lights-out in his game one start. He threw six complete innings, gave up just a single hit and struck out four in the seven-game inning.
- Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 2-for-4 in the first game with four RBI. He also had a pinch-hit RBI-double in the second game, bringing his RBI count to five for the day.
- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) had two hits on the day, and drove in two runs.
GAME 1 RECAP
The Waves got on the board first in the second inning. After a
Ryan Johnson single,
Connor Bradshaw walked to put runners on first and second. In his first collegiate plate appearance,
Zach Chonkich put down a sacrifice bunt, and a throwing error allowed him to get to second, and Johnson to score from second.
Grant Schoen then singled into left to score Bradshaw from third.
John Peck then doubled down the right field line to plate Chonkich from third. After the Aggies brought in a new pitcher,
Wyatt Young walked to load the bases, and
Reese Alexiades tripled to deep left center, scoring three more runs for the Waves. Pepperdine got its seventh run on an RBI groundout from
Justin Lutes, scoring Alexiades from third. Through two innings, the Waves led 7-0.
In the third inning, the Waves kept up the pace when, after a Schoen walk, Peck launched a ball to deep left field, over the wall for a two-run home run. Two productive outs followed, as Lutes had another RBI-groundout and Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to get the Waves to double digits. Bradshaw then doubled to left-center, scoring
Aharon Modlin, who singled earlier in the inning. After three innings, the Waves led 12-0.
Peck singled in the top of the fourth and was brought in on an Alexiades double to give the Waves a 13-0 lead. Alexiades was then brought in on a Lutes double, which advanced Modlin to third after his single. Johnson then reached on an error that scored Modlin to give the Wavs a 15-0 lead through four innings.
Trevor Hinkel was masterful in his third start of the year. The freshman threw six shutout innings, giving up just a single hit and striking out four batters.
The game was scheduled for seven innings, and
Hayden Walker came in for the Waves to close the door.
GAME 2 RECAP
In the second game of the day, the Aggies struck first, with an RBI groundout, taking a 1-0 lead after one.
The Waves answered in the top of the second. Peck reached on an error and was moved to second on a Chonkich groundout. Schoen then singled to right center, scoring Peck from second and evening the score at 1-1 through two innings of play.
Pepperdine pushed another run across in the top of the fourth on a Modlin groundout. Chonkich got the first hit of his college career and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a Young double, Chonkich was at third and was brought in on a groundout to shortstop, giving the Waves a 2-1 lead after three and a half. The Aggies answered back win an RBI single to tie the game back up at 2-2 through four innings of play.
UC Davis loaded the bases in the sixth inning and got a two-RBI double to take a 4-2 lead through six innings of play. The Aggies added to their lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly, extending their lead to 5-2.
In the ninth, Bradshaw hit a two-out double down the left-field line and Peck hit a single to put runners on first and third. Then Alexiades came in to pinch hit for
Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and doubled in Bradshaw from third, cutting the Aggies lead to 5-3. Pepperdine loaded the bases, but a groundout ended the threat.
