LAST TIME OUT:
The #22 Waves faced some stiff competition during the first round of the 2021 ITA Kickoff Weekend, where they took on #11 Texas A&M. Pepperdine dropped 4-0 to the Aggies, but not without huge efforts from
Daniel De Jonge, Robert Shelton and
Pietro Fellin who all won their opening sets.
SCOUTING AZ:
Arizona State's lone ranking falls in doubles, where the tandem of Tim Ruehl and Andrea Bolla clock in at #14 in the country. The Sun Devils are currently 2-1 on the season with wins over Florida Atlantic and Grand Canyon. Its loss came by the way of #5 Texas in a high-stakes 4-3 final score.
The Waves were scheduled to take on Arizona in Malibu last season, but a rare bout of rain and the impending COVID-19 pandemic canceled the event only minutes from first serve. The Wildcats currently sit ranked #24 in the country, with singles player Jonas Ziverts ranked at #50, Filip Malbasic at #54 and Gustaf Strom at #105. Arizona has accrued four wins and a single loss after defeating Grand Canyon twice, Liberty and Florida Atlantic. Their lone loss came against #9 Florida.
NEXT TIME AT OUR PLACE:
The Waves return home for a slew of matches, beginning on Friday, February 19 against Cal Poly at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
