#6 Pepperdine Falls Twice in San Luis Obispo

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. – The #6 Pepperdine beach volleyball team was felled in a pair of season-opening duals at the Mustang Beach Volleyball Complex on Saturday night, dropping close 3-2 decisions to host #8 Cal Poly and to PCH Cup rival #9 LMU.

MATCH RECAP
The Waves came out strong to open against PCH Cup rival LMU, pulling ahead 1-0 after Simone Priebe and Melanie Paul downed Georgia Fusco and Lacy Haddock 21-11, 21-17 on court four. The Lions then countered with a two-set win on court two to tie things up. In the second flight, the opposition took a three-set win on court one to gain the edge, and LMU's No. 5 pair closed it up with a two-set win to take the victory.

Gigi Hernandez and Alexis Filippone ended things on a high note, defeating Emma Doud and Savannah Slattery 21-19, 22-24, 15-11 to make it a 3-2 overall score.

ÂIn the second dual, Priebe and Paul once again came out swinging on court four, collecting a 21-18, 25-23 win over Brayden Gruenewald and Vanessa Roscoe. The Mustangs two's pair then downed the Waves to tie the score, and the No. 5 duo for Cal Poly was able to gain the lead with a two-set win over Pepperdine.

Deahna Kraft and Brook Bauer would tie things up after defeating Torrey Van Winden and Macy Gordon 21-17, 21-16 in the top-spot, but the Waves on court three were unable to overcome a deficit late in the third set, dropping the three-set match to finish the dual with a 3-2 Waves' loss.

Next, Pepperdine returns to Malibu to host the Waves' Invite on March 7, welcoming Long Beach State, South Carolina and Stetson to Zuma Beach for the one-day tournament.
