WAVEPOINTS
• After a Thursday night off, the Pepperdine men's basketball team gets back to West Coast Conference play with Saturday's visit to San Diego.
• The Waves have won five of the last six games played at USD.
•
Colbey Ross was named to the Lou Henson Award mid-season watch list this week. He is averaging a WCC-best 7.4 assists per game. Nationally, he's fourth in total assists (118) and sixth in assists per game. Ross has more career assists than any junior in the country with 536 (second place is 62 assists behind).
• Ross set Pepperdine's career record for assists on December 14 and is now taking aim at the career scoring record. He's moved up to 16th place on the all-time list and is just 362 points shy of the record.
• The Waves boast three of the top nine scorers in the WCC: Ross (second at 19.8),
Kameron Edwards (fourth at 16.5) and
Kessler Edwards (ninth at 14.8). The trio has scored 64.4% of the Waves' points this season.
• The Waves rank first nationally in free throw percentage at 84.4%. They have hit 80% or better of their free throws in 13 of their 16 games, and they have had a better free throw percentage than the opponent in 15 of 16 games. The Waves have three of the top six free throw shooters in the WCC (Ross first at 91.3%, Kameron third at 81.5% and Kessler sixth at 78.7%).
• Other notable WCC stats: Ross is second in minutes (36.8) and fourth in three-pointers made (2.2),
Darryl Polk Jr. is third in steals (1.6),
Kessler Edwards is first in blocked shots (1.6), tied for first in double-doubles (five) and second in rebounding (8.1),
Skylar Chavez is seventh in three-pointers made (2.1) and
Kameron Edwards is tied for seventh in rebounding (6.5).
• Pepperdine has been dealing with missed playing time all season long. The Waves have been without at least three of their scholarship players due to injury or illness 10 times so far this season. Only three players have appeared in all 16 games.
• The Waves are home twice next weekend, first against PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount on Thursday (Jan. 16) and then vs. Saint Mary's on Saturday (Jan. 18).
WAVECASTS — Saturday's game can be heard online via WaveCasts at PepperdineWaves.com. Veteran play-by-play man Al Epstein, a 2015 Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, will be behind the microphone (now in his 35th season, this will be his 1,054th consecutive broadcast for the Waves).
WATCH — A San Diego-produced webstream can be seen via the WCC Network.
PEPPERDINE — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). The Waves have produced 205 conference championships, 318 All-Americans and 53 Olympians. Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #50 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
