NORTHRIDGE, California – Devyn Gilfoy notched an early goal and the Pepperdine women's soccer team wrapped up non-conference play with a 1-0 road victory at CSUN on Thursday evening.
The Waves (4-4-2) got on the board in the ninth minute. Both teams had numerous opportunities to score during an up-and-down game, and Pepperdine ended up with a 14-6 advantage in shots over the Matadors (6-2-3).
GOALS
Pepperdine 9': The Waves worked a counterattack to perfection, with junior forward Brie Welch (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande HS) taking the ball in the middle of the field and sliding it to the right in front of sophomore forward Leyla McFarland (Bonita, Calif./Eastlake HS), who immediately sent the ball in front of the goal. Junior forward Devyn Gilfoy (Brentwood, Calif./Liberty HS) didn't have to break stride as she one-timed it into the back of the net from eight yards out for her first goal of the season, and the sixth of her career.

Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "CSUN's a great team. We started really, really well. It's maybe the best start we've had all year. Somehow we found a calm out there and played really nice soccer. I'm proud of the combination that led to the goal, and Devyn getting her first goal of the season was a big one. They put us under more pressure in the second half and we were trying to get a second goal without conceding, and we had to make some big plays defensively down the stretch. We'll take it."
