Kanfer Named to WCC All-Academic First Team

MALIBU, Calif. – For the second year in a row, Matthew Kanfer of the Pepperdine baseball team has been named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic team, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Billy Cook, Aharon Modlin, Michael Mahony and Christian Stoutland were all named honorable mention.
In order to be eligible for consideration for the All-Academic team, an athlete must own at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the institution.
A senior from Playa del Rey, Calif., Kanfer graduated in April with a 3.43 GPA and a degree in media production. On the field, he was one of five Waves to hit at least .300, led the team in RBI with 36 and was tied for second on the team with three home runs.
Cook had a breakout year in 2019 shortened after a solid freshman campaign. The sophomore from Monument, Colo. Hit .279 in 30 games, leading the team in home runs with five, and driving in 21 more. In the classroom, Cook earned a 3.42 GPA in pursuit of a degree in business administration.
Modlin, a junior infielder from Irvine, Calif., makes his second straight appearance on the All-WCC Academic Team as an honorable mention. Through his third year on campus, Modlin has a 3.39 GPA while working on his economics degree. On the field, Modlin hit .278 while playing in 47 of the 49 games on the year.
Mahony graduated this April with a 3.34 GPA and a degree in business administration. On the field, the senior from Huntington Beach, Calif. had a 6.10 ERA in 12 appearances with 20 strikeouts. This is the second year in a row that he was named to the WCC All-Academic team as an honorable mention.
A fifth-year senior earning his master's degree in American Studies, Stoutland was named to the WCC All-Academic team as an honorable mention for the second year in a row after earning a 3.68 GPA. On the field, Stoutland appeared in 19 games as the primary closer for the Waves, putting up a 5.85 ERA and striking out 42 batters while picking up five saves on the year.
