Waves Open Final Series with Win Over Saint Mary's

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team got eight and two-thirds innings from senior righty Jonathan Pendergast in Friday's 8-5 West Coast Conference win over Saint Mary's. Cory Wills hit a two-run home run to open the scoring for the Waves.

The Waves (24-23, 14-11 WCC) scored eight unanswered runs after the Gaels (31-20, 15-10 WCC) scored their first run in the opening frame.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior outfielder Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Yavapi College) got the Waves on the board with a two-out, two-run home run in the fourth inning.
  • Junior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI.
  • Senior RHP Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) went 8.2 innings and struck out six in his seventh win. It was his fifth game of the year going at least eight innings.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Gaels got on the board in the first frame on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead after one.

Pepperdine answered in the fourth when, after Matthew Kanfer walked, Wills hit a 0-1 pitch up and over the right field wall to give the Waves a 2-1 lead after four innings of play.

In the fifth, the Waves added another run when Wyatt Young singled in Reese Alexiades, scoring from second after singling and advancing on a wild pitch. The Waves took a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning.

Modlin had the first of his RBIs in the sixth after a Kanfer single, as he hit a single into left to score Kanfer from second. Duncan McKinnon then tripled down the right field line to plate Modlin. Alexiades then hit a sacrifice fly to bring McKinnon home and give the Waves a 6-1 lead through six.

Pepperdine got its final two runs in the seventh inning when Brandt Belk brought in Quincy McAfee from second after a leadoff double. Belk was then brought in by Modlin on a single up the middle to give the Waves an 8-1 lead after seven.

The Gaels scored three in the eighth on back to back singles and an error to cut the lead down to 8-4. Then in the ninth, they got an RBI single to bring the lead down to 8-5, but could not get any more.

Pendergast got his seventh win of the year, getting two outs in the ninth before Christian Stoutland came in for the final out. Pendergast struck out seven in the game.
