Belk Homers in Loss to Top-Ranked UCLA

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team played host to the No. 1 team in the nation, falling to UCLA 8-5 on Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The Waves (19-18) had a couple of chances to get back in the game, but the Bruins (35-7) answered back every time.

BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore infielder Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) had the best day for the Waves, hitting a three-run home run in the fifth inning. On the day, he went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
  • Freshman infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) had one of the other RBI on the day, a double in the fifth to get the Waves on the board.
  • Freshman catcher Mitchell Dickson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus HS) had the Waves' final RBI in the seventh inning.

GAME RECAP
UCLA started things quickly, getting a solo home run in the second inning to get the scoring going. They then scored twice more in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead after three.

The Bruins scored again in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, and then twice in the fifth on a double and RBI groundout. After four and a half innings of play, the Bruins led 6-0.

Justin Lutes led off the fifth inning for the Waves and walked. He then stole second and scored on Young's double down the right field line. After Quincy McAfee reached base on a two-out error from the Bruins, Belk launched a ball that careened off the scoreboard for a three-run home run. After five full innings, the Waves trailed the Bruins 6-4.

In the sixth inning, UCLA got another run on an infield single with two outs, but were prevented from scoring a second when Belk gunned a man down at home to end the inning. The Waves then came to bat in the bottom half and scored on a bases-loaded single from Dickson to cut the lead back to two runs. Through six innings of play, UCLA led 7-5.

The Bruins got their final run in the eighth inning on a fielder's choice that scored their eighth run.
