Waves' Comeback Falls Short in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pepperdine baseball team fell in West Coast Conference play to San Francisco 9-6 on Friday at Benedetti Diamond to open the three-game series.

The Waves (19-19, 10-9 WCC) fall to three games behind the critical fourth-place spot in the WCC standings, as only four teams make it to the WCC Championship Tournament in Stockton, Calif. The Dons (26-20, 13-9 WCC) remain in fourth place in the conference.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior outfielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) went 2-for-4 on the day, with a ninth-inning RBI.
  • Sophomore outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in the ninth.
  • Junior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 3-for-5 on the day with an RBI.

GAME RECAP
The Dons broke the score open in the third inning, scoring five runs on four hits to take a 5-0 lead after three innings of play.

San Francisco scored again in the fourth on a two-run home run to push their lead to 7-0 through four.

Pepperdine got its first (only) run of the game in the fifth inning, after Alexiades singled up the middle and Modlin drove him in from second after a wild pitch. Through five innings of play, the Dons had a 7-1 lead over the Waves.

A leadoff home run in the sixth for the Dons gave them an 8-1 lead after six innings. San Francisco added to that lead in the eighth, when a double steal worked in their favor, adding their ninth run and taking a 9-1 lead through eight innings.

In the ninth, the Waves loaded the bases with one out. Greg Mehlhaff drove in Modlin from third to cut the lead to 9-2. Kanfer then singled to deep right field, bringing Wyatt Young across the plate to cut the lead to six runs. Mike Malinchak then walked with the bases still loaded before Alexiades drove in two with a one out single. The Waves could not complete the comeback, as two strikeouts ended the game with the final score sitting at 9-6 in favor of San Francisco.
