LONG BEACH, California – The Pepperdine track teams posted three more school records at the Beach Invitational, the final meet of the 2019 season and the last event under the direction of retiring head coach Robert Radnoti.
Â
Sophomore Brandon Davis (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) broke the record in the men's 400 and improved upon his own record in the 400 hurdles. Sophomore Caila Tongco (Kent, Wash./Kent-Meridian HS) lowered the women's 100 hurdles record for the fourth time this season.
Â
"Three school records made it a great day," said Radnoti, who completed his 13th year in charge of the program. "Brandon finally got Treet's record in the 400 and then lowered his own record in the 400 hurdles, and I'm excited for him. Caila continued her year-long assault on the school record in the 100 hurdles, and took it down another notch. It's a good way to end the season. I'm really proud of all the athletes and coaches, and I wish them all the best of success in the future."
Â
Tongco's previous three record times in the 100 hurdles were 15.06, 14.65 and 14.50, and today she brought it down to 14.43 seconds.
Â
The men's 400 hurdles hasn't been run often by the Waves, but Davis took ownership of the record last week after competing in it for the first time, then brought the record down to 59.66 seconds today. He also edged Treet Allison's 2017 record of 50.94 seconds in the 400 by going 50.79 today.
Â
Senior Catie Barilla (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos HS) competed for the final time today. She set the school record in the women's 400 hurdles in 2017, and today she ran a season-best 1:05.94.
Â
In the men's 5,000 on Friday night, sophomore Tim Wells (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs HS) finished in 10th place out of 34 runners.
Â
Sophomore Preston Gromer (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh HS) was the men's top performer in the 800. On the women's side, top finishers included Tongco in the 100, freshman Alexa Ortega (Chatsworth, Calif./St. Genevieve HS) in the 200, junior Grace Palmer (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin HS), sophomore Abbey Meck (Santa Cruz, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley HS) in the 1,500 and freshman Shelby White (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill HS) in the 5,000.
