AZUSA, California – Nick Heath's outstanding collegiate running career came to an end on Thursday night as he posted a sub-15 minute effort in the men's 5,000 meters at Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational.
Heath (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley HS), a senior, will graduate as the Waves' all-time leader in the 8K and 10K in cross country while holding the Waves' 3K and 5K records in outdoor track. He was named Pepperdine Athletics' Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year this past weekend as well.
He posted a time of 14:58.92 on Thursday night, just a second away from his season best.
Sophomore
Justin Touhey (Stony Point, N.Y./Don Bosco Preparatory HS) also had a good showing in the 5,000, finishing eighth out of 30 runners in his heat with a time of 15:05.75.
Only five Waves were in action on Thursday. Freshman
Jackson Felkins (Southlake, Texas/Carroll Senior HS) and junior
Jalen Frantal (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central HS) also competed in the men's 5,000, and sophomore
Abbey Meck (Santa Cruz, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley HS) was in the women's 5,000, though she did not finish.
"Nick was our top performer, running under 15 minutes tonight," Pepperdine Coach
Robert Radnoti said. "In his final collegiate race he ran strong and was tough. Nick's going to go on to have a great post-college running career and will probably move up to the marathon one day.
"Justin ran a nice competitive race tonight. Abbey had to drop out of her race, she has been kind of sick lately."
Track season concludes with Pepperdine's participation in Long Beach State's Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday (April 19-20).
